Frequently Asked Questions

  • The normal application cycle is open through Summer to the first week of Fall Quarter. A link will be available where prospective members will answer a series of questions about their interest in the team and be asked to submit a resume. The following questions are example short response questions.

    • Why do you want to join UW Formula Motorsports?

    • What excites you about engineering?

    • What do you want to get out of the team?

    Leads of each sub team will review applications, and reach out to interview prospective members that will best fit the team. In the interview, members will be asked behavioral and technical questions. Following the interview, leads will return with the status of the applicatoin

  • Applications are typically open from Summer to the first week of Fall. Specific sub teams may open applications at other times in the year depending on need.

  • Drivers are selected by current Drivers and Directors through a series of trials in sim racing, go karts, and in the real car. Drivers must be on an technical and admin team like all other members. They must also be well versed in vehicle dynamics and electrical safety operations.

  • The team partners with many engineering organizations based in the Seattle area. Team partners typically are looking to support STEM education and/or hire directly from the team. In return, the company is featured on the car, website, social media and apparel. Organizations looking to partner with the team should reach out directly at uwfsae@uw.edu

  • Team members can expect to spend about 20 hours a week working on their technical and admin teams. The team's shop in the Engineering Annex has 24/7 access and members can be found at all hours of the day. The time commitment may increase depending on the time of year. 

  • A successful member on a team gains deep technical knowledge in their field of engineering by working through the design, build, test cycle. Member's should be experts in their technical projects and be able to validate all engineering decisions in relation to the vehicle's goals. Successful members will also engage in admin work to build team infrastructure and improve operations.
